Jonathan will be on 2027 ballot, says coalition convener

The political landscape in Nigeria is buzzing with speculation surrounding a potential comeback for former President Goodluck Jonathan in the 2027 presidential election.

When he said it’s not a computer game, what he was trying to say was that it’s not an easy thing for somebody to just come up and say he wants to contest presidency. A lot is involved. A coalition, actively campaigning for his return, has confidently asserted that Jonathan will indeed feature on the ballot. Dr. Tom Ohikere, the convener of the Coalition for Jonathan and a member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), conveyed this assurance in a recent interview, indicating that Jonathan himself would soon make his position public.

Ohikere sought to clarify Jonathan's earlier remarks, which some observers had interpreted as hesitation. He explained that when Jonathan stated the presidency was 'not a computer game,' he was emphasizing the immense complexity and seriousness of the presidential race, rather than expressing a lack of interest.

But all I want to say is that Goodluck Jonathan will be on the ballot.

While Jonathan has not yet officially committed to the coalition's proposal, he has reportedly been consulting widely. The ADC appears poised to serve as his platform should he decide to contest. However, the legal question of his eligibility, stemming from his previous terms in office, remains a significant point of contention, with a Federal High Court case currently examining constitutional term limits.
