Journalist beaten in Colima, Mexico; family present during attack

Journalist Pablo Ávila Martínez reported being physically assaulted on a Friday morning in Tecomán, Colima. He stated that the attackers told him the beating was a consequence of his published work. The incident occurred as Ávila Martínez was leaving his home with his family. He later shared on social media that while he sustained significant injuries, he and his family are safe. "Fortunately and thanks to God I am well and my family too; the injuries are a bit severe, but my life goes on," he wrote. Ávila Martínez indicated he does not know who attacked him or ordered the assault. He emphasized that his work has solely been to inform the public on matters of public interest, contributing to society. He lamented that insecurity and violence now target those who practice journalism. The attack, he explained, had not only physical repercussions but also emotional and psychological impacts on his family. He thanked others for their solidarity and support, announcing a temporary hiatus from his journalistic duties to recover. No authorities have yet commented on the incident.
