Jurist Mauricio Gaona to be Colombia's Next UN Ambassador in New York

Jurist Mauricio Gaona Bejarano is set to become Colombia's next permanent ambassador to the United Nations in New York, with his appointment announced by President-elect Abelardo de la Espriella. De la Espriella, who assumes office on August 7, stated that Gaona's selection aims to "recover the international prestige of the country with merit, preparation, and state ethics."

Gaona, a constitutional law expert and professor, brings extensive academic and international analysis experience to the role. He holds a law degree from the Universidad Externado de Colombia, a doctorate in Human Rights from McGill University in Canada, and completed a two-year residency at Harvard Law School. His academic credentials also include a master's degree in International and Comparative Law from UCLA and another in European Union Law from Paris II University (Panthéon-Assas). He has also been a guest lecturer at prestigious institutions like Yale, MIT, Oxford, and Cambridge.

Gaona will succeed Leonor Zalabata, a human rights defender and member of the Arhuaco indigenous community, in the ambassadorial post. The president-elect's office indicated that Gaona will focus on fostering consensus, strengthening strategic alliances, and defending Colombia's democracy, security, and interests on the global stage. The statement added that "The government of the miracle homeland will be represented to the world by the best talents of the country."

Mauricio Gaona's background includes a personal connection to Colombia's history of violence; he is the son of magistrate Manuel Gaona Cruz, a constitutionalist who was assassinated during the M-19 guerrilla group's seizure of the Palace of Justice in Bogotá in November 1985. Gaona is also an author of several books on legal and fiscal matters.
