Kaduna varsity lecturers begin two-week warning strike

Lecturers at Kaduna State University (KASU) have commenced a two-week warning strike, protesting unresolved demands concerning salaries, earned allowances, university autonomy, and promotion arrears. The decision was made by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU)-KASU chapter after an emergency meeting attended by hundreds of academic staff.

The union stated that the Kaduna State Government's recent approval of N300 million for Earned Academic Allowance does not fully address their outstanding grievances. The lecturers are also contesting the implementation of a 25-35 percent salary agreement and payment of promotion arrears. ASUU-KASU had previously issued a two-week ultimatum to the government, which expired on Thursday, leading to the current industrial action.

Owing to the expiration of the warning which elapsed today (Thursday), we have to come back to tell members what has so far transpired when we issued the two-week warning since 12th August, 2026. And after serious deliberations, it was agreed we embark on two weeks warning strike, after which we will come back to take a definite stand. And this is if, at the end of the two weeks, nothing was forthcoming, we have to close the university.

The strike is ongoing while the ASUU-KASU leadership engages in negotiations with a newly constituted nine-member committee appointed by the Kaduna State Government. The committee, announced by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Abdulkadir Meyere, is tasked with comprehensively reviewing the demands of ASUU and other university-based unions. Meyere emphasized the administration's commitment to staff welfare and industrial harmony through dialogue.
