Karapinar becomes first woman general in Turkiye's air force

Ozlem Karapinar has made history in the Turkish military, becoming the first woman to achieve the rank of brigadier general in the Turkish Air Force. Her promotion was confirmed this week during a Supreme Military Council (YAS) meeting, a significant reshuffling of the country's armed forces leadership. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan presided over the council's decision in Ankara.

The promotion, effective August 30, was part of a broader reshuffle that saw 25 generals and admirals elevated to higher ranks. Additionally, 69 colonels were promoted to general or admiral. This move is a notable milestone for the Turkish military, where top leadership positions have historically been held by men.

Karapinar's ascent signifies a step towards greater gender inclusivity within the highest echelons of the armed forces.
