Kaunas Opens Its Largest Nursery and Kindergarten, Vėjū́kai

Kaunas welcomed its largest kindergarten on September 1, when children and their parents entered the newly built Vėjū́kai facility in the Romainiai district for the first time.

Built from the ground up at Girios Street 37, the one-storey A++ energy-rated building contains 14 groups for 250 children. Each group has separate learning and rest areas, with direct access to an inner courtyard and playground.

The U-shaped building also includes offices for specialists, a multipurpose hall, a kitchen and other rooms designed for children’s education and daily needs. A fence surrounds the site, while parking spaces serve parents and staff. About 70 employees will work at the kindergarten.

First of all, I thank the city leaders for caring about every resident of Kaunas, from the youngest to the oldest. One expression of that care is this wonderful, beautiful, largest nursery and kindergarten in Kaunas. I wish us all that a favourable wind would always blow from this day forward.

The opening celebration featured stilt walkers, soap bubbles, face painting, temporary tattoos and balloon modelling. Director Ingrida Ramanauskaitė-Markevičienė thanked the city leadership and the families who waited for the opening, saying she hoped “a favourable wind would always blow” from the new kindergarten. Mayor Visvaldas Matijošaitis thanked the designers and contractors, saying they completed the building in a year and a half.

Construction began at the end of 2024. The project is Kaunas’ second greenfield investment in preschool infrastructure, following the 200-place Vaikystės takas kindergarten opened in Šilainiai in 2022. Renovated units of the Medeinos school-kindergarten also opened in Aleksotas on September 1.
