Kazakhstan: Astana Sees Heavy Rainfall, Flooding After Two Days of Storms

Astana experienced a significant downpour, with 18.2 millimeters of precipitation falling in a single day, accounting for approximately one-third of the monthly average. This heavy rainfall followed another 20.8 millimeters recorded the previous day, bringing the two-day total to 39 millimeters – nearly 70 percent of the monthly norm.

The intensity of the rainfall was notable, with 11.4 millimeters recorded in just 20 minutes, equivalent to 11.4 liters of water per square meter. The deluge led to localized flooding in several parts of the city, submerging numerous streets. City utility services were placed on high alert to address the aftermath of the severe weather.

In addition to the flooding, the capital was also hit by hurricane-force winds and localized hail on Thursday afternoon. These high winds caused damage, toppling fences and trees, and power outages were reported in several districts. Utility services are actively working to clear collectors and storm drains, a process that includes steaming pipes and constructing new sewerage systems and treatment facilities.
