Kazakhstan Earns U.S. Recognition as Safe Tourism Destination

Kazakhstan has earned the U.S. Department of State's least restrictive travel advisory, placing it at Level 1 and bolstering its image as a secure international tourist spot. This development is part of a broader effort to strengthen the nation's tourism appeal.

The country is experiencing significant growth in visitor numbers and investment. In 2025, Kazakhstan welcomed 15.7 million foreign visitors, a 3.1% rise from the previous year, with 11.1 million classified as tourists. Tourism investment surged by 32.6% year-on-year, reaching 1.26 trillion tenge (US$2.4 billion). This positive momentum continued into the first quarter of 2026, attracting three million foreign travelers.

To further enhance accessibility, Kazakhstan is investing heavily in its transport infrastructure. Plans include opening or resuming 15 international air routes in 2026, connecting the nation with cities like Vienna, Rome, and Tokyo. Domestically, tourist airports in Katon-Karagai, Zaysan, and Kenderli are slated for completion in 2026. Road improvements and new roadside service facilities are also underway.

Nature-based tourism is a key focus, with projects like the Almaty Superski aiming to expand access to mountain activities. Visits to protected natural areas have increased, and national parks now offer numerous tourist routes and ecological trails. Officials stress the importance of balancing tourism development with environmental protection.
