Kazakhstan Launches New Unicameral Legislature, Kurultai

Kazakhstan has officially begun a new chapter in its political evolution with the inaugural session of the Kurultai, the country's new unicameral legislature. President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev inaugurated the session on August 28, emphasizing its significance as a pivotal moment for the nation's state system renewal.

Tokayev articulated that the Kurultai is poised to play a crucial role in this new era, providing a substantial boost to the entire state apparatus. The assembly is composed of 145 deputies, elected for five-year terms via party lists. The Central Election Commission confirmed the registration of all elected deputies on August 27, following elections held under a revised constitutional framework.

The unicameral legislative body of the country, the Kurultai, officially begins its work. This means that from this day the process of renewing the state’s political system begins.

The newly formed Kurultai brings together a diverse group of professionals, including representatives from business, public administration, education, science, media, law, agriculture, and civil society. Among the deputies are entrepreneurs, academics, journalists, doctors, and individuals with prior parliamentary experience in the Mazhilis or Senate. Tokayev expressed confidence in their ability to serve with dignity, acknowledging the honor and responsibility of being part of the first convocation.
