Kazhydromet warns residents of Astana, Almaty and 11 other cities

Kazhydromet has warned residents of Astana, Almaty and 11 other Kazakh cities about weather conditions that could worsen air pollution on Saturday, September 5.

The affected cities include Aktobe, Karaganda, Zhezkazgan, Balkhash, Temirtau, Atyrau, Kostanay, Ust-Kamenogorsk and Semey. Forecasters describe the conditions as a combination of short-term weather factors, including calm periods, light winds, fog and temperature inversions. These conditions can allow harmful pollutants to build up in the near-surface layer of the atmosphere.

Astana and Almaty are expected to have partly cloudy and dry weather. Astana temperatures are forecast at 8°C to 10°C overnight and 27°C to 29°C during the day. Almaty is expected to range from 11°C to 13°C at night and 22°C to 24°C during the day.

Other forecasts include daytime temperatures of up to 30°C to 32°C in Aktobe, 29°C to 31°C in Atyrau and Kostanay, and 20°C to 22°C in Ust-Kamenogorsk. Fog may occur overnight and in the morning in Semey and Ust-Kamenogorsk, while parts of Karaganda Region could also see fog. Most areas are expected to remain dry.
