Kefalonia fire cripples power, water supply; generators fall short

A fierce fire on the Greek island of Kefalonia has left residents struggling with severe disruptions to essential services, particularly electricity and water supply. The blaze has prompted an urgent response from the Hellenic Electricity Distribution Network Operator (HEDNO).

HEDNO deployed three large electricity generators to the settlement of Scala in an attempt to alleviate the power shortage. However, this significant effort proved insufficient, managing to cover only 3% of the settlement's electricity demands. This highlights the scale of the damage and the ongoing challenges in restoring full services.

The situation has created considerable hardship for the local population, who are facing difficulties with daily life due to the lack of reliable power and water. Efforts are ongoing to assess the full extent of the damage and to expedite repairs to restore normalcy to the affected areas of the island.
