KH Ahmad Rifa'i: National Hero Whose Islamic Education Ideas Transcended His Time

National Hero KH Ahmad Rifa'i is celebrated as a transformative figure in Indonesian Islamic education, whose forward-thinking ideas significantly outpaced his era. As the founder of the Rifa'iyah movement, born in Kendal, Central Java, in 1786, Rifa'i laid a robust foundation for Islamic education that prioritized intellectual depth, ethical conduct, and religious moderation long before these principles became mainstream.

Dr. Abdul Kholiq Syafi'i, Chairman of the Central Leadership of the Rifa'iyah Youth Indonesia (AMRI), highlighted that while the term "religious moderation" was not in vogue during Rifa'i's time, his teachings inherently embodied its values. Kholiq noted Rifa'i's unique ability to synthesize Islamic knowledge from Arabic sources and other literatures, rendering them into local languages and cultural contexts for easier comprehension by the populace.

"While Sunan Kalijaga is known for Islamizing communities, Kiai Ahmad Rifa'i is recognized for purifying Islamic teachings among a populace still influenced by syncretic practices," Kholiq stated. Rifa'i's educational reforms stressed the importance of santris becoming both "alim" (knowledgeable) and "adil" (just). Alim signified mastery of religious sciences alongside general knowledge, including science, while adil meant maintaining moral integrity by avoiding major sins and striving to shun minor ones.

Throughout his life, KH Ahmad Rifa'i penned approximately 60 books covering a wide array of subjects, including education, theology, ethics, jurisprudence, economics, and law. His intellectual influence was so profound that the Dutch colonial government perceived him as a dangerous figure, subjecting him and his followers to constant surveillance.

"Every student whose chain of knowledge connects back to Kiai Rifa'i is still required today to complete his 60 books," Kholiq added. "The goal is to cultivate true teachers and students who are both knowledgeable and just, as per his testament."
