KH Taufik Damas Urges Return to AHWA for PBNU Chairman Election to Preserve Syura Tradition

A proposal to reconsider the direct election of the General Chairman of the Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) has been put forward, with KH Taufik Damas, Deputy Secretary of the Nahdlatul Ulama (PWNU) DKI Jakarta, advocating for a return to the traditional method of electing the chairman through the Consultative Body (AHWA).

Damas believes that the direct election system, which has been in place for some time, needs to be re-evaluated. He argues that the AHWA system, which involves a council of senior scholars, is more in line with the organization's historical traditions and the spirit of Syura, or deliberation.

The idea of directly electing the General Chairman of the Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) needs to be reconsidered.

He emphasized that the Syura tradition is a core value of Nahdlatul Ulama and that the election of the PBNU chairman should reflect this principle. By returning to the AHWA system, Damas believes the organization can better preserve its identity and ensure that leadership is chosen based on wisdom and experience, rather than popular vote.
