Konstantopoulou: Wiretapping Case is About Democracy; Prosecutor's Decision Aids Cover-Up

Zoe Konstantopoulou, president of the Plevsi Eleftherias party, has strongly condemned the decision by the new prosecutor general of the Supreme Court not to pursue the wiretapping scandal further. She labeled the decision, made shortly after the prosecutor's July 1 appointment by the New Democracy government, as an attempt to conceal "crimes of the Mitsotakis Government."

Konstantopoulou stated that this is the fourth prosecutor appointed by the current administration who has acted to cover up government misconduct. She named previous prosecutors – Doyakos, Adeilini, and Tzavellas – as predecessors in this alleged pattern of obstruction. Konstantopoulou characterized the recent decision as a "clandestine act" made during August, aiming to confirm the "embarrassment of the mechanisms" trying to hide the truth.

She asserted that the case is a matter of democracy itself and that democratic citizens, forces, lawyers, and journalists will not back down. "No matter how many gears they turn, in the end, truth, light, and justice will prevail," Konstantopoulou declared. She promised continued struggle and refusal to remain silent, vowing to fight every moment until justice is served.

Konstantopoulou's remarks came after the prosecutor general decided not to revive the investigation into the wiretapping scandal, despite a previous court decision and prosecutorial proposal from February 2026 that had called for further inquiry. The scandal involves alleged illegal surveillance activities, and Konstantopoulou views the prosecutor's move as an effort to bury the issue.
