KPK Explains Why Bribery Suspect Not Brought to Jakarta

The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has clarified its decision not to transfer a bribery suspect, Yaqub Abdh Al Mu’arif, to Jakarta for detention. Seven individuals were apprehended in an operation on July 2, 2026, leading to the designation of Langkat Regent Syah Afandin, known as Ondim, and Yaqub as suspects. While Ondim was brought to Jakarta, Yaqub is being held at the Medan Police Station.

Achmad Taufik Husein, acting Director of Investigation at the KPK, cited a shortage of flight tickets as the reason for Yaqub’s continued detention in Medan. He explained that the KPK had coordinated before moving those apprehended, but limited tickets meant only the state official, Ondim, could be transported. "There are limitations on flight tickets, so only the state official could be brought. There are limitations in the region for tickets to Jakarta. While there are no issues from Medan to Jakarta, it seems tickets from the region to Jakarta are already full," Taufik stated during a press conference.

Consequently, the KPK has placed Yaqub in custody at the Medan Police Station's detention center. Ondim is being held at the KPK's detention center. Both suspects are detained for an initial 20-day period. Taufik assured that this situation would not impede the investigation or detention process, noting, "Technology exists. We will conduct video calls for the handover of investigation administration, so there are no problems."

Previously, the KPK arrested seven people across three locations in Langkat Regency, Binjai City, and Medan City. Ondim was apprehended at his private residence in Medan. The other individuals detained included Yaqub, identified as a private sector figure and part of Ondim's campaign team; Ilhamsyah, acting Head of the Langkat Education Office; Syahrial, a close associate of the regent and former North Sumatra DPRD member; Akbar, Ondim's aide; Zulkifli, Ondim's driver; and Sugiarto, another private sector individual. The KPK has charged Ondim under articles related to bribery and Yaqub under provisions of the Criminal Code concerning bribery and related offenses.
