Kwara traffic agency dismisses one, demotes two for motorist extortion

The Kwara State Road Traffic Management Authority (KWARTMA) has taken disciplinary action against three of its personnel, dismissing one and demoting two others for alleged extortion of motorists. The sanctions follow an investigation into a viral video that captured the individuals purportedly engaging in unethical conduct during the monthly environmental sanitation exercise in Ilorin.

The incident occurred at the Geri Alimi Roundabout on Saturday, June 27, 2026. The video's circulation prompted public concern and an immediate investigation by KWARTMA management. The Chief Executive Officer of KWARTMA, Abdullahi Oba, acknowledged the public's concerns, stating that the conduct depicted in the video does not align with the authority's values, standards, or policies.

The dismissal demonstrates the seriousness with which the management regards corruption, extortion and other forms of misconduct.

Oba affirmed KWARTMA's strict zero-tolerance policy against extortion, bribery, corruption, and any form of misconduct. The implicated personnel were interrogated and investigated by the Provost Department before facing the Senior Staff Management Committee. Following disciplinary proceedings, they were found culpable and sanctioned, with the measures taking effect from July 9, 2026. Oba highlighted the dismissal as a significant disciplinary action for the authority, underscoring its commitment to combating corruption and reinforcing public trust. He warned that any personnel found engaging in similar practices would face appropriate disciplinary action, emphasizing that there would be no exceptions.
