Kyrgyzstan and China sign 32 agreements after talks

Kyrgyzstan and China signed 32 documents after President Sadyr Japarov and Chinese President Xi Jinping held official talks in Bishkek. The package includes a treaty on permanent good-neighborliness, friendship and cooperation, as well as a joint declaration on developing their comprehensive strategic partnership.

Several agreements concern border infrastructure. They cover the development of the Bedel crossing, construction of a bridge over the Uzengu-Kuush River and cooperation in managing Kyrgyz-Chinese border checkpoints. The sides also exchanged letters on the construction and technical equipment of the Bedel crossing.

The agreements extend beyond trade and infrastructure. They include cooperation on science, technology, innovation and technology transfer, support for joint research, and a partnership between Bishkek State University and Beijing Foreign Studies University. Other documents address medical equipment, standardization from 2026 to 2028, physical education and sport, culture through 2029, human resources and ethnic issues.

The package also includes agreements on television, radio, media content and online audiovisual services. Kyrgyz media group Kyrgyz Tuusu signed a memorandum with China Media Group. Separate documents established sister-region ties between Issyk-Kul Region and China’s Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, and between Osh Region and Sichuan province.

Xi is visiting Kyrgyzstan on a state visit. The two leaders held an informal meeting with their wives the previous day, before formal negotiations took place. They also signed documents concerning material assistance for organising the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit.
