Labour Party to opposition groups: Join us, we’re the real coalition

The Labour Party (LP) in Nigeria is positioning itself as the primary opposition platform for the 2027 general elections, urging other opposition groups to unite under its banner. The party argues that it already possesses the most robust nationwide structure, capable of challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

While the Labour Party appreciates the need for broad-based collaboration among opposition forces to democratically unseat the ruling All Progressives Congress, the party maintains that its platform already represents the strongest and most organically structured coalition capable of winning a presidential election in Nigeria.

National Publicity Secretary Ken Asogwa stated that while the LP supports broad collaboration, forming new, fragmented alliances would weaken the opposition. He emphasized that the Labour Party's unique affiliation with the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress provides an unparalleled grassroots presence. This connection links the party to civil servants across the country, ensuring a presence in virtually every community.

By implication, every serving and retired civil servant across the country is naturally connected to the Labour Party family through these labour institutions.

That gives the Labour Party an unrivalled grassroots presence. There is hardly any polling unit, ward, local government or community in Nigeria that does not have a serving or retired civil servant. No other political party, including the APC, can genuinely boast of such an extensive nationwide structure.

The party contends that it would be politically unwise to abandon its existing institutional advantages, including a formidable organizational structure, energized membership, and a "credible presidential candidate who is young, well-educated and possesses the capacity to provide the visionary leadership Nigerians seek." The LP believes the opposition's focus should be on uniting behind its platform, rather than "reinventing the wheel."

Rather than creating new platforms or fragmented alliances, the national interest would be better served by strengthening the one opposition party that already possesses a tested nationwide network and institutional foundation.
