Lagos Hails Residents’ Turnout for First Monthly Sanitation Since 2016

Lagos State is breathing cleaner air today, thanks to the overwhelming response from its residents to the reintroduced monthly environmental sanitation exercise. The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, expressed profound gratitude, calling the widespread participation a powerful testament to the enduring spirit of collective civic responsibility that defines our great city. This isn't just about sweeping streets and clearing drains; it's about Lagosians taking ownership of their environment, demonstrating a renewed commitment to the well-being of our shared heritage.

Our deepest appreciation goes out to every single Lagosian who stepped out today to take ownership of our common heritage.

This successful relaunch, the first full implementation since 2016, marks a significant milestone in the administration's efforts to restore environmental order. The commendation extends beyond the citizens to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat, whose steadfast commitment made this revival possible. Their leadership, alongside the active involvement of the First Lady, Mrs. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, and the Deputy Governor's wife, Mrs. Oluremi Hamzat, set a powerful example. The dedication of local government chairmen across all 20 LGAs and 37 LCDAs, who championed the process at the grassroots, has been instrumental in fostering this renewed civic culture.

Furthermore, the collaboration with various transport unions, who mobilized their members, underscores a unified approach to environmental stewardship. This exercise, held between 6:30 am and 8:30 am, signifies more than just a clean-up; it represents a collective step towards a healthier, more sustainable Lagos. The government's recognition of this widespread participation highlights the success of its strategy in re-engaging the populace in vital community initiatives. It's a clear indication that when leadership inspires and citizens respond, positive change is not only possible but inevitable.
