Lagos trains 400 council workers for retirement

The Lagos State Government has initiated a training program for around 400 officers in the Unified Local Government Service who are nearing retirement. The workshop, held at the Adeyemi Bero Auditorium in Alausa, Ikeja, focuses on preparing these individuals for a successful transition from active service to retirement.

Retirement should not be seen as the end of a career but the beginning of another phase of life that requires careful planning and informed decision-making.

Toyin Ogunlana, Permanent Secretary of the Office of Local Government Establishments and Training, emphasized that retirement should be viewed as a new phase of life requiring careful planning. She stated the workshop underscores the government's dedication to enhancing public servant welfare through programs promoting financial security, dignity, and a better quality of life after leaving service.

Ogunlana noted that many retiring officers face uncertainty due to a lack of knowledge regarding pension administration, financial planning, healthcare, emotional adjustments, and post-retirement engagement. This often stems from delayed planning, with preparation only beginning in the final years of service. The workshop aims to provide practical insights into pension processes, financial management, and sustainable post-retirement opportunities.

Many officers approaching retirement face uncertainty because of limited knowledge of pension administration, financial planning, healthcare management, emotional adjustment and opportunities for productive engagement after leaving public service.

Director-General of the Lagos State Pension Commission, Babalola Obilana, commended the ongoing program. He urged participants to familiarize themselves with the Contributory Pension Scheme, maintain accurate records, and regularly consult their Pension Fund Administrators to ensure timely access to benefits. The training is expected to empower participants to make informed decisions for financial stability and a fulfilling retirement.
