Large Wildfire Rages on Paros, Forcing Evacuations

A significant wildfire continues to burn fiercely on the Greek island of Paros, forcing the evacuation of five settlements overnight as firefighters battle the flames. The blaze, which erupted on Tuesday afternoon, has seen continuous efforts throughout the night, with operations significantly bolstered by the first light of dawn.

The situation remains a cause for serious concern, particularly due to fears of strengthening winds, which could further complicate the containment efforts. Persistent flare-ups and strong winds across the Cyclades islands are severely hindering the work of the firefighting teams. So far, a total of nine settlements have been evacuated following multiple warning messages from the emergency number 112.

Early Wednesday morning, residents from Trypiti, Glyfa, Pyrgaki, and Aspro Chorio were instructed to evacuate towards Dryos. Earlier, a message had been issued for Agkairia, directing residents towards Aliki beach. Since Tuesday afternoon, the areas of Agios Charalambos, Kambi, Bougados, Aneratza, and Kamari had already been evacuated.

According to the Civil Protection agency, 112 messages urged residents in Agkairia, Trypiti, Aspro Chorio, Glyfa, and Pyrgaki to leave their homes and head towards Aliki beach or Dryos. The Fire Service reported that 66 firefighters, including four forest firefighting commando teams from Athens and 16 fire engines, were actively engaged at the fire front. Seven aerial means, including two planes and five helicopters, began water drops at first light, with more expected to be deployed if necessary. Volunteer crews and local municipal resources, including two water tankers and a construction machine, are also assisting in the operation, coordinated by the Deputy Chief of the Fire Service. An additional 20 firefighters and eight fire engines are en route from Rafina.
