Latin American Hopes End in Montreal as Fonseca and Tirante Exit in Round of 16; Spain Shines

The Masters 1000 tournament in Canada saw the end of Latin America's challenge in the singles competition on Sunday, with both João Fonseca and Thiago Tirante exiting in the round of 16. Their defeats paved the way for American and Spanish players to advance.

Brazilian prodigy João Fonseca, the 19-year-old 22nd seed, was stopped by the reigning champion Ben Shelton. The American, seeded fifth, secured a 6-3, 6-7 (7-3) victory, asserting his dominance. This loss, following Argentinian Thiago Tirante's earlier defeat to Learner Tien with scores of 6-4, 6-4, officially removed all Latin American representatives from the title contention.

Shelton, the sole top-ten male player in Montreal, will face either Jakub Mensik or Botic van de Zandschulp in the quarterfinals. Reflecting on his win, Shelton expressed satisfaction, noting his strong connection with the ball and effective returns during the match. He is aiming to reach his second Masters 1000 quarterfinal of his career.

In contrast, the tournament has become a landmark event for Spanish tennis. Daniel Mérida and Rafael Jódar have both reached the quarterfinals, marking the sixth time in history that two young Spanish players have achieved this feat at a Masters 1000 event. Mérida, 21, delivered a significant upset by defeating Tallon Griekspoor 6-3, 6-1. Jódar, 19, also advanced, creating a surprising Spanish duo in the latter stages of the North American tournament.

Mérida, who also has a background in journalism, shared his excitement after securing the biggest win of his career. He stated, "I am very happy to have reached my first quarterfinals in an ATP Masters 1000 and motivated to continue giving 100% in the next round." He is set to compete against Shelton in the upcoming match.
