Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov is set to meet with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Manila on Thursday, July 23. The encounter will take place on the sidelines of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Foreign Ministers' meeting.

Lavrov stated that the meeting presents an opportunity for direct dialogue on significant topics of mutual interest. "This meeting will be useful in any case. It is preferable to ask questions and get answers," he remarked, highlighting the value of direct communication amid strained relations.

The meeting occurs against a backdrop of persistent tensions between Moscow and Washington. Russia has recently condemned U.S. strikes on Iran, a key Russian ally in the region. Meanwhile, the diplomatic stalemate over the war in Ukraine continues, with no significant progress in peace negotiations. These Ukrainian drone attacks on Russian refineries and fuel depots have impacted fuel supplies in some Russian regions.
