LAWMA prosecutes 280 waste offenders in six months

The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has taken decisive action against environmental offenders, prosecuting at least 280 individuals for indiscriminate waste disposal over the past six months. This enforcement drive is part of the state government's broader strategy to enhance environmental sanitation and public health.

LAWMA Managing Director Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin revealed that the prosecutions, which led to convictions, followed increased surveillance and public complaints. Offenders were caught dumping waste on roadsides, medians, and in drainage channels, as well as engaging in open defecation between February and July 2026. Gbadegesin stressed that such actions are unacceptable in a modern economy, stating, "The era of dumping refuse on roads and into canals is over."

The agency is not only focusing on enforcement but also on public enlightenment and community engagement. LAWMA is educating residents on proper waste disposal methods and the severe consequences of blocked drainage systems, especially during the rainy season. They are collaborating with community leaders, market associations, and Private Sector Participant (PSP) operators to improve waste collection services and address areas with inadequate services.

These prosecutions are a clear warning that environmental laws will be enforced without exception.

LAWMA warned that convicted individuals could face fines, community service, or imprisonment. Enforcement teams will continue patrols across all local government areas. Gbadegesin reiterated that proper waste management is a shared responsibility, urging Lagosians to use designated bins, patronize assigned PSP operators, and report any instances of illegal dumping.
