Lebanese army accuses Israel of attacks, ceasefire violations during U.S. general's visit

The Lebanese army has accused Israel of persistent attacks in southern Lebanon, alleging that these actions violate the understandings reached between the two countries. The denunciation comes amid the visit of U.S. General Joseph Clairfield, who heads the committee overseeing the implementation of the ceasefire agreement.

In a statement, the army reported that Israeli forces "have detonated" municipal buildings, schools, clinics, and homes in the southern Lebanese town of Zawtar al Sharqiya. These actions, along with drone attacks in various southern locations despite the ceasefire, are described as confirmation of Israel's "destructive strategy" aimed at causing "maximum possible damage" and preventing stability.

The Lebanese army also accused Israel of hindering the "full deployment" of the Lebanese army in areas from which Israeli forces have withdrawn. This withdrawal is part of a framework agreement reached on June 26 through U.S.-mediated direct negotiations between Beirut and Tel Aviv, though the group Hezbollah was not involved.

General Clairfield met with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun to discuss measures for implementing the framework agreement. He was also briefed by the Commander of the Lebanese Armed Forces, Rudolph Heikal, on the difficulties the Lebanese army faces in carrying out its missions and deploying in southern Lebanon. Reports indicate that Israeli attacks in southern Lebanon have increased since last week, following the conclusion of the seventh round of direct negotiations in Rome aimed at agreeing on the withdrawal of Israeli troops.
