Lebanon’s president seeks to allay concerns over negotiations with Israel

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun has moved to reassure the public regarding the sensitive negotiations with Israel over their shared maritime border. Following a seventh round of discussions held in Rome, Aoun took to social media platform X to emphasize Lebanon's unwavering position.

"Negotiators and I will not allow Israel to remain on a single inch of our land, nor a single soldier of its army to stay on our soil," Aoun stated, reinforcing Beirut's core demand. This declaration comes after the latest round of talks, which reportedly ended without any apparent breakthroughs in expanding the "pilot zones." These zones are designated areas from which Israel withdraws its troops, with the understanding that Hezbollah militants will be kept out.

An Israeli source indicated that no date has yet been set for the next round of negotiations. Despite the lack of immediate progress, President Aoun reaffirmed Lebanon's commitment to finding a negotiated solution. He challenged the notion that gains made by force can only be reclaimed by force, suggesting that the realities on the ground have disproven this adage.

The ongoing negotiations are critical for both nations, particularly concerning resource exploration and security in the disputed maritime area. Lebanon's firm stance, as articulated by President Aoun, underscores the national importance placed on territorial integrity.
