Libya's National Oil Corporation (NOC) issued a strong condemnation of "repeated" attacks targeting its oil assets, demanding a thorough investigation after a recent incident at the Zawiya refinery. A fire erupted in a gasoline tank at the facility, which held approximately 4.5 million liters of fuel, posing a significant danger to adjacent infrastructure and the surrounding environment.

This attack follows a drone strike on the same refinery just two days prior, which caused material losses but no human casualties. The NOC highlighted an alarming escalation in attacks, posing a direct threat to the safety of workers and local residents. The corporation urged competent authorities to intervene urgently, investigate the circumstances, identify and apprehend those responsible, and bring them to justice.

The attacks underscore the precarious security situation in Libya, occurring within a context of frequent clashes between militias in the country's west, particularly in areas near the capital, Tripoli, and Zawiya. Libya has been in a state of perpetual alert due to militia conflicts and popular unrest, with calls for an end to the division and prolonged crisis that has plagued the nation for over a decade. The country has been deeply divided since 2014, with the Government of National Unity controlling the west and a rival administration in the east.
