At 94 years old, former intelligence agent Nguyễn Thị Mỹ Nhung, widely known by her alias Tám Thảo, lives a quiet life, but her past is marked by daring espionage during the Vietnam War. Her wartime exploits, particularly her undercover operations during the 1968 Tet Offensive, remain a significant part of her legacy.

Nhung was a key operative in the H.63 strategic intelligence unit, a group that included notable figures like intelligence colonel Nguyễn Văn Tàu (Tư Cang) and Major General Phạm Xuân Ẩn (X6). During the conflict, she infiltrated the heart of the South Vietnamese government's apparatus in Saigon, meticulously gathering strategic intelligence for the revolutionary cause.

Now residing in a modest home in Ho Chi Minh City, Nhung's physical frailty is evident. She requires assistance to move and her memory has faded with age, often leading to fragmented speech. Yet, fragments of her past surface, like her memories of her hometown in Bắc Ninh and her sister, Nguyễn Thị Mỹ Linh, who also joined the revolution.

When asked about her wartime experiences, Nhung's response is a resolute "Not afraid!" Her caretaker, Lê Thị Phượng, who has been with her for over 20 years, recalls Nhung's past vivid accounts of her missions. Phượng remembers Tám Thảo describing how she would don an elegant green ao dai, carrying a fruit basket that discreetly concealed secret documents for her superiors.

Though specific details now elude her, Nhung still finds comfort in old photographs and a book about her life and the H.63 unit. The book recounts her successful infiltration in 1964, leveraging her fluency in English to secure a translator position within a naval unit of the opposing government, a critical step in her intelligence-gathering career.
