Lifeguard battles waves in dramatic rescue of woman on Chania beach

A dramatic rescue unfolded on a beach in Chania, Crete, where a lifeguard battled powerful waves to save a woman caught in the surf. The incident, captured on video, occurred on Monday morning, mere minutes before the lifeguards were scheduled to begin their official duties.

According to reports, one of the three lifeguards on duty spotted the woman being pulled out by the strong currents, unable to return to shore on her own. Without hesitation, the lifeguard entered the rough sea and swam to her aid. The video shows the lifeguard reaching the exhausted woman and bringing her back to the safety of the coast, with the assistance of a second lifeguard.

One of the lifeguards involved described the difficult conditions, emphasizing the increased safety measures taken on days with red flags, indicating dangerous sea conditions. "It was at the beginning of the shift, when we were opening the towers, specifically 10 minutes before the shift started," the lifeguard stated. "We always arrive earlier, and on days with red flags, extra lifeguards are always deployed. This is very important."
