Liga de Quito welcomes Argentine Gustavo Álvarez as new coach

Liga de Quito has welcomed Argentine coach Gustavo Álvarez, who will take charge of the team for the remainder of the Liga Pro season, the Copa Libertadores round of 16, and the Copa Ecuador.

Álvarez, 53, steps in after the dismissal of Brazilian Tiago Nunes on June 16 due to unsatisfactory results in the domestic league. Despite Nunes's departure, he guided the team to the knockout stages of both the Copa Libertadores and Copa Ecuador.

The club, known as "El Rey de Copas" (The King of Cups) in Ecuador, currently sits sixth in the Liga Pro standings with 28 points from eight wins, five draws, and eight losses. Álvarez previously coached San Lorenzo in Argentina until June 22, leading them through 13 matches with three wins, eight draws, and two losses.

His coaching career began in 2016 with Temperley, followed by stints at Aldosivi, Patronato, Peru's Sport Boys and Atlético Grau, and Chile's Huachipato and Universidad de Chile. Liga de Quito highlighted Álvarez's arrival by posting a photo of him surrounded by the club's international trophies: the 2008 Copa Libertadores, the 2009 and 2023 Copa Sudamericana titles, and the 2009 and 2010 Recopa Sudamericana trophies.
