Lithuania braces for heavy rain and strong winds as storms spread across the country

Lithuania’s September 1 began quietly enough for many back-to-school events to start without rain. By daytime, however, the weather was expected to turn unsettled across much of the country.

Forecaster Elvyra Latvenaitė warned that a cold atmospheric front and a line of converging airflows would move across Lithuania. Rain was expected first in western and northwestern districts, then across a wider part of the country. Some areas could see heavy showers, thunderstorms and small hail.

Wind was another major concern. Southwesterly winds were forecast to turn westerly and strengthen to 7 to 12 meters per second, with coastal gusts reaching 15 meters per second. During thunderstorms, gusts could rise to 16 to 20 meters per second.

On Tuesday, a cold atmospheric front will move across Lithuania, preceded by a stormy line of converging airflows.

Hazardous-weather warnings from noon to 9 p.m. covered Šiauliai, Panevėžys, Utena and Vilnius counties for heavy rain, lightning and stronger winds. Kaunas and Alytus counties were under warnings because of thunderstorms. Residents were advised to stay indoors during lightning and avoid open areas, isolated trees and metal structures. Drivers were warned of reduced visibility and slippery roads.

The weather was expected to cool gradually after September 1. Wednesday was forecast to bring more showers and strong westerly winds, while rain would continue into Thursday.
