Lithuania: Kaunas man sentenced to 18 years for drug trafficking and smuggling

A Kaunas resident, identified as A.T. (born 1981), has received an 18-year prison sentence for large-scale drug trafficking and smuggling. The Kaunas Regional Court found him guilty of illegally possessing and distributing psychotropic substances with the intent to sell, as well as smuggling them. This sentence, combined with a previously suspended sentence, marks a significant legal outcome for the repeat offender.

A.T. had previously been convicted for similar offenses and evaded the execution of his sentence. While abroad, he assembled a group of accomplices to carry out further criminal activities. The investigation, described as complex and requiring extensive international cooperation, was led by prosecutors from the Organized Crime and Corruption Investigation Department of the Vilnius Regional Prosecutor's Office.

In the autumn of 2023, A.T. directed his accomplices via phone applications from abroad, providing instructions for manufacturing and distributing psychotropic substances, as well as their smuggling into other countries. One associate produced over 4.6 kg of powder containing more than 600g of amphetamine in a farm in the Pasvalys district. This associate was later apprehended while transporting the drugs to Vilnius.

Furthermore, A.T. organized the transport of a substantial quantity of psychotropic substances from the Netherlands to Lithuania. In November 2023, his associates were caught attempting to smuggle over 41 kg of MDMA into Lithuania at the Kalvarija border crossing. Some of A.T.'s accomplices have already been convicted in separate proceedings, while others are still undergoing legal processes.

A.T. was placed on an international wanted list in early 2022 after failing to report for his prison sentence. He was eventually arrested in Ecuador in March 2024 and extradited to Lithuania in October of the same year. The court has recognized him as a recidivist, leading to the substantial final sentence.
