Lithuania's national basketball team faces depleted squad for crucial FIBA qualifiers

Lithuania's national basketball team is facing a critical situation ahead of the FIBA World Cup qualifiers, with a substantial number of key players withdrawing their participation. This exodus has left the squad significantly weakened, prompting concerns about their ability to secure the necessary wins in the upcoming "window."

The team has already suffered a major blow with a loss to Italy, and the roster for the crucial matches against Turkey, Serbia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina is notably depleted. Players who have reportedly declined invitations include prominent names such as Jonas Valančiūnas, Domantas Sabonis, Marius Grigonis, Edgaras Ulanovas, Arnas Velička, Deividas Sirvydis, and Kasparas Jakučionis. This leaves coach R. Kurtinaitis with a difficult puzzle to solve in assembling a competitive team.

To advance, Lithuania likely needs at least four, possibly five, victories in the upcoming stage. However, the pool of available talent has become alarmingly shallow. Beyond those who have explicitly stated they will not participate, there are several other players whose availability remains uncertain, casting a shadow over the team's prospects.

Further complicating matters are the situations of Ignas Brazdeikis, Igno Sargiūnas, and Augustas Marčiulionis. Brazdeikis has just signed with Malaga's Unicaja and needs to establish himself in a new team. Sargiūnas, after a strong season with Rytas, has joined the EuroLeague giant Fenerbahçe and must compete for minutes under coach Šarūnas Jasikevičius. Augustas Marčiulionis, despite attending the training camp, did not receive playing time in official matches, leaving his willingness to commit again uncertain. The team desperately needs players who can create their own shots and handle the ball, but securing these talents for the FIBA window appears increasingly difficult.
