Lithuanian adventurer battles fierce storm on Missouri River

Lithuanian adventurer Aurimas Valujavičius found himself in the midst of a formidable storm while navigating the Missouri River in his kayak. Earlier in the day, he had observed dark, ominous clouds, but they ultimately converged around him as evening approached.

Valujavičius likened the storm's intensity to conditions he previously faced in Atlanta, but noted the significant difference of needing to set up a tent for shelter. He captured footage of the immense rain and wind battering his campsite, describing the experience as "something else entirely."

"I don't know how many meters per second [the wind was]," he recounted after the storm subsided slightly. "If I had stayed on the water, I would have been thrown ashore – I don't think I could have controlled the kayak." He expressed relief that he managed to move all his gear into the tent just before the downpour began.

Despite the ferocity of the storm, Valujavičius's kayak remained secure. He admitted to spending the evening inside his tent with wet clothes, but lauded the resilience of his temporary shelter. "Of course, the poles bent inward, but it held," he said, emphasizing that this was likely the strongest wind he had ever endured, even surpassing his experiences in Atlanta. Valujavičius is currently undertaking a months-long journey paddling approximately 5,600 km along the Missouri and Mississippi rivers, aiming to finish at the Gulf of Mexico by Christmas.
