Lithuanian basketball mourns legend Vladas Garastas

Kaunas, Lithuania – A somber gathering of over 200 people, including Lithuania's basketball elite, convened at the Petrašiūnai Cemetery on Saturday to honor the life of Vladas Garastas, a legendary figure in Lithuanian basketball.

Among those paying their respects were basketball icons Arvydas Sabonis, Rimas Kurtinaitis, and Ramūnas Butautas, alongside hundreds of friends and fans. The farewell was marked by poignant reflections and shared memories of the esteemed coach.

Mindaugas Balčiūnas, president of the Lithuanian Basketball Federation, delivered a touching tribute, expressing the basketball community's profound gratitude. "Dear coach, these words are a thank you from the Lithuanian basketball community for the life you dedicated to basketball, for the attention and time you gave each of us," Balčiūnas stated.

He lauded Garastas as an exceptional educator, a talented organizer, and a true leader who inspired and nurtured people. "You gave Lithuania basketball glory, and revealed the power of Lithuanian basketball to the world," Balčiūnas added. "You became a symbol of wisdom, unity, and dedication. An authority in life for many players, coaches, and like-minded individuals."

Balčiūnas concluded by affirming Garastas's enduring legacy. "Your spirit will forever live in every Lithuanian basketball victory. Thank you, coach. Thank you for raising Lithuania, basketball, and us. Thank you for the invaluable lessons of hard work, wisdom, and dedication. Most of all, we thank you for the human example you demonstrated throughout your life. Your teaching will live within us, your victories in Lithuania's history, and your name in our hearts."
