Lithuanian Football Legend Šemberas Honored, Reflects on Career and Champions League Dream

Deividas Šemberas, a celebrated figure in Lithuanian football, was recently honored by FK Žalgiris as a club legend during their UEFA Conference League home match. The Vilnius-born player, who began his journey at the Žalgiris football school, shared his reflections on a distinguished career.

Šemberas spoke about the inspiration he drew from iconic players like Arminas Narbekovas and Robertas Fridrikas, whose performances fueled his ambition. He fondly remembered his youth, even the honor of serving as a ball boy at the old Žalgiris stadium. He also credited the late legendary coach Benjaminas Zelkevičius for offering him his first professional contract at the young age of 15 or 16, calling it an extraordinary experience to grow alongside such figures and a club of significance.

Throughout his career, Šemberas became one of Lithuania's most decorated footballers, yet he consistently prioritized team results. "I was the kind of player who shone brightest on the field. I could be invisible, I could, as they say, carry the piano while others played it, but the most important thing was that we could all rejoice in victories together. What drove me the most were the trophies won and first places," he stated.

After a successful career abroad, Šemberas returned to Žalgiris in 2014, securing domestic titles. However, a failed attempt to qualify for the UEFA Champions League in 2015, specifically against Malmö, left a lingering regret. "It was painful because we failed to advance to the next stage. It's a shame that with Žalgiris, we couldn't reach the Champions League group stage. At that time, the system was different, and it was much harder to achieve. I myself have played in the Champions League quarterfinals, round of 16, and group stage, so I know what this tournament means to every footballer," he said.

Šemberas expressed hope that current and future Žalgiris players will experience the Champions League, emphasizing the need for long-term, consistent work and investment in both foreign players and the club's own youth academies.
