Lithuanian municipality investigates compensation claims after tree crushes cars

A powerful gust of wind caused a large willow tree to topple onto five parked cars in Josvainiai, Lithuania, resulting in extensive damage. The incident has reignited discussions among residents about the tree's removal, with claims that prior requests to have it felled were denied.

Local elders reported that the municipality had previously assessed the tree and found it to be in satisfactory condition, thus refusing permission for its removal. However, the recent storm's intensity and direction appear to have been critical factors in the tree's collapse. Fortunately, no one was injured during the incident, as the cars were parked and people were indoors.

Everyone is now saying that the tree should have been cut down long ago, but when it was discussed, many were also against this idea. Who could have thought that this would happen?

Residents whose vehicles were damaged are now seeking compensation from the municipality. One resident has already submitted a claim, which is currently under review by a commission. The municipality stated that it cannot provide immediate assurances regarding compensation until an investigation is completed. Officials will assess whether the storm can be classified as a force majeure event, which could absolve them of responsibility.

The owners of the damaged cars, described as older models, reportedly lack comprehensive insurance (Kasko), meaning the financial burden of repairs falls directly on them.
