Lithuanian PM to visit air defense center amid regional concerns

Lithuanian Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevičius is scheduled to visit Karmėlava to gain a firsthand understanding of the nation's air surveillance and defense capabilities. The visit, set for Wednesday, aims to assess the current air situation and explore strategies for enhancing Lithuania's airspace protection.

Visiting the Military Air Force's Airspace Surveillance and Control Center, the Prime Minister seeks to evaluate the current air situation and discuss the Government's further actions to strengthen Lithuania's airspace protection.

According to the Prime Minister's press secretary, Gedas Salyga, Sinkevičius intends to evaluate the existing air surveillance and control systems at the Military Air Force's Airspace Surveillance and Control Center. The discussions will also focus on the government's future actions to bolster the country's aerial defense. Salyga emphasized that strengthening defense and ensuring the effective use of defense investments are key priorities for the Prime Minister, who has repeatedly stressed the importance of accelerating air defense improvements.

The visit occurs against a backdrop of increasing concerns over drone activity in Europe. Recent incidents include a drone entering Bulgarian airspace from Romania and another crashing near Moldova's border with Ukraine. Moldova subsequently recalled its ambassador to Russia for consultations following a drone explosion.

Strengthening defense and effective use of investments in defense are among the Prime Minister's most important priorities.

Lithuanian Minister of National Defence Robertas Kaunas recently revealed that intelligence suggests Russia is considering provocations in the Baltic region, potentially using Ukrainian-made drones in "false flag" operations targeting critical infrastructure. In response, Lithuania has enhanced the security of strategic sites, including the Klaipėda LNG terminal and key energy infrastructure, for an indefinite period. The Prime Minister assured the public that the country is preparing for various scenarios and that there is no need for public alarm.
