Local election pledges: Democratic Party's 'Mega Special Zones,' People Power's 'Half-Price Rent'

As the June 1 local elections approach, South Korea is witnessing a vigorous policy debate between the ruling and opposition parties. The Democratic Party, leveraging the 'ruling party premium,' is championing regional growth initiatives, notably the creation of 'mega special zones' for advanced industries. This strategy aligns with the Yoon Suk-yeol administration's national balanced development plan, aiming to attract businesses with regulatory, tax, and financial incentives. Candidates are also emphasizing administrative integration, with proposals for re-establishing inter-regional administrative bodies like the 'Busan-Ulsan-Gyeongnam (BTR) Megacity.'
