Lost Rolex worth $12,000 returned to tourist at Phu Quoc Airport

Authorities at Phu Quoc International Airport have successfully recovered and returned a lost Rolex watch, estimated to be worth around 300 million Vietnamese dong (approximately $12,000 USD), to a foreign tourist. The valuable timepiece was misplaced during security screening procedures on August 3.

The incident occurred as the tourist, Jiming Shi, and her boyfriend were preparing to board a China Eastern Airlines flight to Xi'an, China. During the baggage screening process, their suitcases collided on the conveyor belt, causing the boyfriend's Rolex to fall and go unnoticed. The couple realized the watch was missing about 10 minutes later, after passing through the security checkpoint, and immediately reported it to the authorities.

Upon receiving the report, the Phu Quoc International Airport Border Guard Police launched an immediate investigation. They meticulously reviewed security camera footage and traced the couple's movements. To aid the search, they also requested assistance from a South Korean passenger who was directly behind them during the security check. Despite extensive efforts, including searches conducted until just before the flight's departure at 8:30 PM, the watch remained unfound. The couple, regrettably, had to board their flight without it.

However, the Phu Quoc Border Guard Police continued their search overnight. By 11:29 PM on August 3, they had successfully identified the individual who had found the watch. They promptly shared crucial information about the finder with the passenger, who was already en route to China. Following the flight's arrival at Xi'an Xianyang International Airport in China at 2:34 AM on August 4, the airline and local police, using the information provided by Vietnamese authorities, facilitated contact between the tourist and the person who found the watch. The Rolex was ultimately returned to the owner in perfect condition.

Deeply moved by the dedication of the Vietnamese authorities, Jiming Shi expressed her gratitude in a letter to the Phu Quoc Border Guard Police and the airline. She stated that their efforts not only recovered a materially valuable item but also instilled a profound belief in their professionalism, honesty, and the significance of international cooperation.
