Love bug complaints in Seoul area drop by half after proactive pest control

The number of complaints regarding "love bugs" – the red-backed leaf beetle that swarms the Seoul metropolitan area each summer – has been cut nearly in half this year. This significant decrease is being credited to proactive pest control efforts by local governments, spurred by recent legal amendments addressing rapidly growing insect populations.

Data from the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment shows that from January 1 to the end of last month, 6,016 complaints about love bugs were registered in Seoul, Incheon, and Gyeonggi Province. This figure represents a 48% reduction from the 11,548 complaints filed during the same period last year.

Incheon experienced the most dramatic decline, with complaints plummeting by 87.8% to just 185 this year, a stark contrast to the 1,512 registered last year. Seoul also saw a substantial decrease, with complaints falling by 56.3% to 2,309.

The surge in love bug populations had become a major nuisance in recent years, with Incheon's complaints alone rising from 25 in 2022 to over 1,500 last year. The current reduction suggests that the new pest control strategies may be proving effective.
