LP celebrates workers, demands improved welfare

The Labour Party (LP) used International Workers' Day to highlight the ongoing struggles of Nigerian workers and to press the government for more substantial improvements in welfare. In a statement released by National Publicity Secretary Ken Asogwa, the party extended felicitations to workers while simultaneously issuing a strong call to action for improved living standards.

We use this opportunity to call on those in authority to intensify efforts toward improving the welfare of Nigerian workers.

While the LP acknowledged the recent increase in the national minimum wage as a step in the right direction, the party's leadership was quick to point out that this measure is insufficient to counteract the severe impact of rampant inflation. The statement emphasized that the current economic climate, characterized by rising prices, continues to erode the purchasing power of ordinary Nigerians, making the minimum wage increase a mere drop in the ocean.

The party also took the opportunity to commend the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress for their persistent advocacy for workers' rights. The LP reiterated its commitment to championing policies that ensure fair remuneration and adherence to international labor standards, aligning itself with the ideals of the International Labour Organisation.

While we acknowledge the current administration’s steps to ease the harsh realities faced by workers, particularly the recent increase in the minimum wage, we emphasise that much more remains to be done, especially in view of prevailing inflationary pressures.

Looking towards future political engagements, the Labour Party urged Nigerian workers to maintain their support for the party, expressing confidence in what they termed the "eventual triumph of the people." This message underscores the LP's strategy of positioning itself as the primary political vehicle for the working class in Nigeria, leveraging their concerns to build a broader electoral base.
