Madrid Wildfire Explodes to 26,000 Hectares, Forcing Mass Evacuations

A significant wildfire raging northeast of Madrid since Thursday has continued its rapid expansion, consuming an estimated 26,000 hectares of land. This area is roughly equivalent to 36,000 football fields and has doubled in size since Sunday, according to Emiliano García-Page, the regional government chief of Castile-La Mancha.

García-Page described the fire as the worst in the region's history. While the wind direction has so far spared the capital, where celebrations for the Spanish national football team's World Cup victory were planned, the fire's intensity has forced the evacuation of around 1,200 residents from 30 threatened villages. Firefighting efforts are being intensified, with efforts focused on creating firebreaks to contain the blaze, which spans 120 kilometers.

The fire's severity is attributed to a combination of factors, including abundant rainfall in the preceding winter and spring that fueled dense vegetation growth. This biomass has now dried out due to summer heat, acting as highly flammable tinder. Strong winds, gusting up to 50 kilometers per hour, are fanning the flames, reportedly advancing at speeds of up to four kilometers per hour. Hundreds of personnel, supported by heavy equipment, approximately 45 firefighting aircraft, and helicopters, are battling the inferno. Authorities have stated that the spread of flames towards populated areas has been prevented thus far.

Nationally, Spain has seen over 100,000 hectares destroyed by wildfires since the start of the year, more than double the same period in the previous year, according to the European Commission's EFFIS. This region, along with neighboring Portugal and other European countries, has been grappling with a series of wildfires.
