Major Lithuanian Road Undergoing Reconstruction, Drivers Advised Patience

Drivers in Lithuania's Vilnius district will soon experience improved travel as a significant regional road, the Vievis–Maišiagala–Nemenčinė road (No. 108), begins its reconstruction. This road is a primary artery in the district, connecting several settlements including Nemenčinė, and is essential for daily commutes to work and educational institutions, as well as for public transport and ensuring smooth civil and military mobility across the country.

For years, the road's deteriorating condition has caused considerable inconvenience to residents. "For years, the Vievis–Maišiagala–Nemenčinė road has caused great inconvenience to residents and awaited reconstruction," stated Minister of Transport Juras Taminskas. "This road is important for both local residents and the military, so I made every effort to ensure we could renovate the poorly maintained road for daily commutes and to strengthen national security."

The comprehensive project aims to update the worn-out road infrastructure, enhance traffic conditions, and increase safety for all road users. It will also expand infrastructure for pedestrians and cyclists. Martynas Gedaminskas, CEO of "Via Lietuva," emphasized the project's dual importance: "Investments in the Vievis–Maišiagala–Nemenčinė regional road are important not only for better daily travel conditions for local residents. This road is also significant from a military mobility perspective, so its modernization will contribute to the creation of safer, more convenient, and reliable transport infrastructure."

The reconstruction will address the section through Nemenčinė town and a stretch near Ažulaukė village. Vilnius District Mayor Robert Duchnevič highlighted the significance of the Maišiagala section as a key daily transport route. "It is gratifying that through the joint efforts of the Ministry of Transport, 'Via Lietuva,' and the Vilnius District Municipality, we are finally moving from plans to real work," he said. The project includes not only resurfacing but also comprehensive traffic safety solutions.

A contract for the reconstruction of the section on Nemenčinė Street near Ažulaukė has been signed with AB "Eurovia Lietuva" for 2.6 million euros. Work on this 1.03 km stretch is set to begin in August and is planned for completion by autumn 2027. This phase will focus on repairing the road surface, fixing potholes, and installing 2.5-meter-wide sidewalks on both sides, along with updating the existing pedestrian and bicycle path.
