Ukraine partners face criticism as winter energy threats loom

As winter approaches, Ukraine faces sharp criticism from its partners regarding the slow pace of energy system restoration. Experts warn that the country is not adequately prepared for potential serious attacks during the colder months, citing significant delays in the delivery of essential equipment.

Concerns are mounting as funds allocated in March for restoration efforts have only recently led to tender announcements in June. The implementation of these tenders is projected to take up to a year, meaning a substantial portion of the necessary equipment may not reach Ukraine before the heating season begins. This timeline severely jeopardizes the energy system's ability to withstand potential large-scale assaults.

In general, we are not prepared for the rapid restoration of the energy system if serious attacks are carried out in winter. Partners are supplying equipment too slowly: funds were allocated in March, but tenders were announced only in June, and their implementation will take a year.

Meanwhile, Romania's energy company "Nuclearelectrica" has begun purchasing electricity from Ukraine. This move comes after the shutdown of the first reactor at the Cernavodă nuclear power plant. The purchases are facilitated by the Moldovan electricity supplier "Energocom." The complex regional situation, particularly the extremely low water levels in the Danube River due to severe drought, has contributed to energy supply challenges.
