Majority leader presents business statement for 5-day emergency sitting

Ghana's Parliament has convened for a five-day emergency session, scheduled to conclude on Friday, August 28, 2026. The session was called to address pressing parliamentary business that cannot be postponed, according to Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga.

During the emergency meeting, the House is expected to deliberate on several critical legislative proposals. Among these are the presentation and First Reading of the Banks and Specialized Deposit-Taking Institutions (Amendment) Bill, 2026, and the National Petroleum Authority Bill, 2026. These amendments signal potential shifts in the country's financial and energy sectors.

In addition to legislative duties, the Appointments Committee will undertake the vetting of several high-profile nominees. Mahama Ayariga is slated for vetting as the Minister-designate for Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings is also scheduled for vetting as the Minister-designate for Environment, Science, and Technology. Furthermore, three nominees for the Supreme Court will undergo the vetting process.

The Speaker of Parliament convened this extraordinary session based on Order 53 of the Standing Orders, following a request from the Majority Leader. The urgent nature of the agenda underscores the government's focus on addressing key national issues through legislative and executive appointments.
