Malang Prioritizes Healthcare as Key Development Pillar

Malang city is making healthcare a cornerstone of its sustainable development strategy, ensuring all residents can access quality, equitable, and convenient medical services. Under the leadership of Mayor Wahyu Hidayat and Deputy Mayor Ali Muthohirin, the city's health initiatives are driven by the "Dasa Bakti Unggulan Ngalam Tahes" program. This program emphasizes strengthening primary healthcare, enhancing the quality of hospitals and community health centers, adopting digital services, accelerating stunting reduction, and improving maternal and child health, alongside promoting preventive care.

These health sector enhancements align with the national goals of the Indonesian President and Vice President, particularly in developing human resources and improving basic services to achieve "Indonesia Emas 2045." A key objective for Malang is to bolster Universal Health Coverage (UHC), guaranteeing health insurance for all citizens regardless of their economic status. This is pursued through collaboration with BPJS Kesehatan, the central government, the East Java provincial government, and local budget support for regional participants.

The commitment to UHC is evident in the rising participation rates in the National Health Insurance (JKN) program. Coverage increased from 94.77% in early 2021 to 98.61% in 2022, surpassing 100% in early 2023 and reaching 105.85% by January 1, 2026. This success earned Malang the Universal Health Coverage (UHC) Awards 2026.

"Community health is the foundation of development. Therefore, we continuously strive to provide increasingly accessible, quality, and equitable healthcare services. For us, healthcare is not just about meeting performance targets, but ensuring every citizen receives their right to live healthily and productively," stated Mayor Wahyu Hidayat. The city's focus on health has also positively impacted other development indicators. Life expectancy reached 75.88 years in 2025, exceeding the national average, while the Human Development Index (HDI) rose to 85.55. The local economy grew by 5.92%, and the poverty rate decreased to 3.85%.
