Malaysia eyes more medals at Commonwealth Games 2026

Malaysia's national contingent is optimistic about adding to their medal tally at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, with several events still offering medal opportunities. Following the successful achievement of their five-gold medal target, the focus now shifts to weightlifting, lawn bowls, judo, and track cycling as potential sources for further success.

Weightlifting, lawn bowls, track cycling, and judo still have targets for us to get medals, but in terms of color, we are not specifically targeting, but we are confident that these four events will contribute medals to the country.

Datuk Awalan Abdul Aziz, the Malaysian contingent's chef de mission, expressed confidence that these four sports will contribute medals, though he refrained from setting specific targets for gold, silver, or bronze. "We are targeting five gold, two silver, and four bronze medals, and I think we have achieved that, even if we are one bronze short," Awalan told Utusan Malaysia. "I don't want to mention the color of the medals; if we get five gold, alhamdulillah. I don't want to put pressure on the athletes. If we get gold, that's good."

The weightlifting team has been a standout performer, securing four of Malaysia's five gold medals. Mohamad Aniq Kasdan (60kg), Muhamad Aznil Bidin (65kg), Muhammad Erry Hidayat (79kg), and Hafizuddin Roslin (88kg) all clinched gold. Datuk Abdul Latif Romly also won gold in the T20 long jump. Awalan praised the weightlifters for their significant contribution, noting that despite a reduction in the number of sports compared to the 2022 Birmingham Games, Malaysia is still meeting its objectives.
