Malaysia's border agency to brief public on airport security amid criticism

Malaysia's Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) is planning a special briefing to address public concerns and criticisms regarding airport security systems. The agency's Director-General, Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain, announced that the session will aim to provide a clearer understanding of the airport security ecosystem and its adherence to international aviation standards.

Mohd Shuhaily indicated that the briefing, which will not be a press conference, is scheduled for the near future. He expressed a desire for the public and all stakeholders to grasp the intricacies of how airport security operates. This initiative comes in response to what he described as criticisms, slander, and arguments made by individuals who, he believes, lack a comprehensive understanding of the actual airport security framework.

The AKPS's move follows a series of high-profile drug smuggling incidents linked to air travel. Most recently, police seized a significant quantity of cannabis, valued at approximately RM19.82 million, in multiple operations at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) between July 11 and 17. Earlier in May, police dismantled four drug distribution syndicates, confiscating 251.8 kg of cannabis and methamphetamine worth RM17.8 million in operations around KLIA and Ampang.

These recent developments have raised questions about the effectiveness of screening and security control mechanisms at airports, particularly concerning the roles of various agencies involved in aviation security. Mohd Shuhaily assured that the AKPS would not tolerate any officers involved in smuggling activities and emphasized that the agency would provide necessary explanations before any conclusions are drawn regarding airport security issues. He also anticipates being called by Parliament to provide further details on the matter.
