Malaysia's Irene Henry clinches bronze in weightlifting at Commonwealth Games

Malaysian female weightlifter Irene Jane Henry has secured a bronze medal in the women's 48kg category at the Commonwealth Games Glasgow 2026, marking a proud moment in her debut appearance at the event.

The 21-year-old athlete from Sabah demonstrated impressive strength, finishing third overall with a combined lift of 167kg. Her performance included 77kg in the snatch discipline and 90kg in the clean and jerk.

Henry's bronze adds to Malaysia's medal tally in weightlifting, following Mohamad Aniq Kasdan's gold medal win in the men's 60kg category. This achievement also bolsters the national contingent's overall performance, with para powerlifter Bonnie Bunyau Gustin having previously contributed a bronze medal in the men's lightweight event.

The gold medal was claimed by India's Mirabai Chanu, who lived up to her favorite status by recording a total lift of 190kg. Chanu also set new Commonwealth Games records in snatch (85kg), clean and jerk (105kg), and the overall total (190kg), showcasing her dominance in the sport.

Nigeria's Ruth Asuquo Nyong secured the silver medal with a total lift of 168kg, narrowly edging out Henry by just one kilogram.
